apples julie garden robinson ph.d. r.d. l.r.d. food and nutrition specialist esther mcginnis ph.d. extension horticulturist from orchard to table ۱ outline selecting apple cultivars tree planting and culture nutrition and health research storage preservation freezing canning this project was supported by the u.s. department of agriculture’s usda agricultural marketing service through grant ۱۴ scbgp nd ۳۸. its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the usda. selecting apple cultivars choose cultivars that are well adapted to your state’s climate and soils. use the usda plant hardiness zone map. residents in southern north dakota can protect their investment by selecting an apple tree cultivar with a plant hardiness zone of ۴ or lower while northern residents should select cultivars with a plant hardiness zone of ۳ or lower. the u.s. department of agriculture’s plant hardiness zone map boundaries lack precision. residents living near the zone boundary line should err on the side of caution and select the hardier lower zone. table ۱ lists cultivars that commonly are available in the state by hardiness zone. ۳ selecting apple cultivars one apple tree by itself will not produce fruit. apple flowers require pollen from a different cultivar. for example ‘honeycrisp’ pollen can pollinate a ‘sweet sixteen’ tree but not a second ‘honeycrisp’ tree. horticulturists recommend planting two different cultivars of apple trees within ۱ feet of each other. cross pollination is achieved when a honeybee or native bee carries pollen from a different apple cultivar and deposits it on the flower of the first apple cultivar. alternatively a flowering crabapple can supply the necessary pollen for cross pollination if flowering times overlap. ۴ tree planting and culture new apple trees benefit from the protection of shelter belts and buildings. plant apple trees far enough away from structures to ensure full sun exposure. tree planting and culture rule of thumb space trees a distance equal to the their maximum height. tree height will be affected by the type of rootstock standard semidwarf and dwarf. tree planting and culture avoid low spots vulnerable to flooding and early spring frosts. avoid areas where the water table brings salts to the soil surface. ۷ tree planting and culture perform a soil test soil ph soluble salts level of nutrients apple trees planted in high ph soils greater than ۷.۵ may develop micronutrient deficiencies iron manganese require more monitoring and maintenance dig the right size hole digging the right sized hole is important. trees that are planted too deeply may languish because the roots are oxygen deprived. the hole should be only as deep as the bottom of the root ball. as for the width the hole should be two times as wide as the root ball. check for circling roots that eventually may strangle the tree. circling roots should be cut. when planted the graft union should be ۲ to ۴ inches above the soil line. the graft union is denoted by a swelling between the rootstock and upper part of the tree. burying the graft union may negate the beneficial characteristics of the rootstock. backfill the hole with the original soil and tamp it down. ۹ tree planting and culture thorough watering helps remove air pockets. water regularly the first year or two to help the tree become established. stake the tree the first few years and surround it with wood mulch. new apple trees may take two to eight years to bear fruit. mulching reduces the competition between the new tree and the lawn. in addition mulching helps retain moisture and reduces the chances of mower or weed whip injury. for pruning and maintenance tips see the ndsu extension service publication tree fruit culture and cultivars in north dakota. ۱ an apple a day … … keeps the doctor away. research continues to show that the fiber natural antioxidants and other phytochemicals plant
