observations tpio program or r national climatic data center ncdc as it turns out others in noaa and particularly nesdis were noting other issues with open dap that were getting in the way with noaa’s mission. there is very little funding for opendap and netcdf development – some things were stalled windows netcdf۴ libs for instance . what little funding there was was sometimes going to feature enhancements for a particular use case and particular implementation unidata development of the netcdf java libs and the thredds data server. this created what steve hankin called the unfunded mandate – once a feature was in one system users expected it and the other systems had something of a mandate to keep up – but no funding to do it. do address these issue lewis mcculloch at nedis put together funding from a number of noaa offices or r tpio and ncdc to start and maybe more in the future. opendap unidata linked servers opuls noaa baa grant supports this important collaboration between unidata opendap first goal conformance between opendap unidata servers through which access is gained to growing amounts of noaa related data. other short term goals include asynchronous modes such as are needed for delayed access to near line data perhaps stored on tape e.g. improved access with server side subsetting to data organized on non rectangular meshes such as in coastal modeling work is to unify the serer architectures – and to add a few enhancements while they are at it. david fulker at opendap is the pi. ugrid subsetting will be used as a test case for adding new features through this collaboration. opendap the data access protocol dap۲ combines simple data model with a general set of operators. data model atomic types e.g. ‘integer’ arrays structures grids and sequences. operators these provide ways to subset all but the atomic types. domain neutral by keeping the semantics of the model clean we ensure that it can be applied to many different types of data. by ‘relational types’ i mean there is an explicit relationship between elements of the grid and sequence types. a sequence is similar to a relational table because it has columns of different types and rows of ‘instances’. each element of any given instance is related or bound to the other elements of that row. grids provide a similar behavior but for n dimensional data. it sounds fancy but in
